AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Wat Wiang Klang is a small village temple serving the Ban Wiang Klang community in Tambon Tha Sai, on the agricultural southern edge of Chiang Rai's Mueang district. Officially established as a Buddhist temple in November 2004 and consecrated with royal boundary stones in June 2009, it is a working Mahanikaya monastery and the spiritual center of a rural Thai community.↗↗
Though it lacks the grand historical monuments of Chiang Rai's city-center temples, Wat Wiang Klang offers visitors an unpretentious look at everyday Lanna village Buddhism — the temple compound where locals gather for merit-making, festivals, and ordination ceremonies.↗↗
About the Temple
Wat Wiang Klang belongs to the Mahanikaya order, Thailand's largest and most mainstream monastic fraternity. It is registered as a wat rat — a public temple maintained by the lay community rather than receiving royal patronage. The temple was formally established on 27 November 2004, when the site received its official designation from the government, and in June 2009 it was granted a wisungkhamsima, the royal proclamation that consecrates the ordination hall's boundary for monastic ceremonies.
