AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Hafslundsøy is a small river island in Norway's longest river, Glomma, just two kilometres northeast of Sarpsborg's town centre. Locals simply call it "Øya" — The Island. A pleasant 1.5-kilometre waterside trail winds along its shore, offering gentle walking with open views over the river and surrounding flat farmland.↗↗↗
Beyond the island's shore path, the adjacent Hafslundskogen forest offers a richer trail network between the Hafslund and Nipa areas, where remnants of old farms and crofters' cottages hint at centuries of rural life along the river.↗
The Island Path
The main trail on Hafslundsøy, known locally as Øyastien, follows the water's edge for about 1.5 kilometres with only gentle elevation changes. The surface is a mix of packed path, bark chippings and some gravel, making it comfortable for everyday shoes. It was established as a safe alternative to the island's main road, and remains a favourite route for walkers and dog owners on the island.↗↗
