Who Is Kannika Parameswari?
Kannika Parameswari is a form of the Divine Mother worshipped primarily by the Arya Vysya (Komati) trading community as their Kuladevata—herd deity of the lineage. According to popular legend set in 11th-century Andhra Pradesh, she was the daughter of a merchant king named Kusuma Sreshti of Penugonda. When the Chalukya ruler Vishnuvardhana demanded her hand in marriage, the young Vasavi refused, declaring she would remain devoted to Shiva alone. Rather than allow a bloody siege of her city, she led the elders of 102 gotras into the sacred fire in an act of supreme non-violent resistance. The king, struck by shock and guilt, perished, and Vasavi came to be worshipped as an incarnation of Adiparashakti—the primordial cosmic energy.
