Vellore
Vellore, in the northern reaches of Tamil Nadu, is a city that wears its history in stone. Its skyline is dominated by a vast 16th-century granite fort ringed by a wide moat, while beyond the walls sit temples gilded with pure gold, a quiet memorial to a deposed Sri Lankan king, and a bustle of bazaars that has drawn traders for centuries. It is an unhurried, easy-to-explore destination where military architecture, living worship and a touch of colonial drama all sit within a few streets of one another. The draw here is the layering: a Vijayanagara-era fort later held by Muslim sultans, the Marathas and the British; an ornate Shiva temple tucked inside its ramparts; and the gleaming Sripuram Golden Temple a short drive away. Add nearby forests, a hill escape and a rail hub that makes Vellore a comfortable stop en route between Chennai and the temple towns of the interior, and it rewards both a half-day visit and a longer weekend.
