AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Étang de la Loy is a quiet fishing lake set in a damp valley on the edge of Gouvernes, in the Brie countryside east of Paris. Its name already hints at the skylark (alouette), and today the pond and its surrounding wetlands are prized far more for birdsong than for the carp and pike that put it on the map as early as the 13th century. Free to visit all year round, it rewards walkers, picnickers and patient birdwatchers with a soft, watery landscape that feels a world away from the nearby new towns of Marne-la-Vallée.↗↗
Tucked into the valley of the Ru de la Brosse, the lake is one of the most rewarding stops on a cluster of easy walking loops. A short circuit takes you across a footbridge and along the dam before the path hugs the reedy shore, while longer signed trails stitch it together with the neighbouring Étang de la Broce, the Moulin Russon and the grand grounds of the Parc culturel de Rentilly. With a Google rating of 4.6 from dozens of visitors and hundreds of photos, it has quietly become a favourite green corner for local families and weekend ramblers.↗↗
