A Gift from China on the 60th Anniversary of D-Day

The statue's arrival in Normandy began with an idea. Yao Yuan, a celebrated contemporary Chinese artist who after years of forced factory labour during the Cultural Revolution devoted his career to themes of harmony and peace, had already presented peace sculptures to the peoples of Korea and Russia, and in 2001 raised the original World Peace figure overlooking a square in Beijing. As the 60th anniversary of the landings approached, he wished to place a new, larger work near the Normandy beaches as an act of remembrance — a gesture meant to recall the horror and absurdity of war and to urge each visitor to help safeguard peace.↗↗

The choice of Grandcamp-Maisy was no accident. In the artist's eyes, Normandy's wartime experience echoed China's own — both nations had suffered enormous losses and had been helped toward liberation by American arms. The town also sits at the threshold of one of D-Day's most storied actions: on the morning of 6 June 1944, US Army Rangers scaled the cliffs at nearby Pointe du Hoc to silence German artillery that threatened the invasion fleet, suffering heavy casualties in an operation Eisenhower judged decisive for the landings. The cast-steel figure was melted down in China, shipped by sea, and raised on a red granite base by a team of around twenty to thirty workers flown in from the artist's own workshops.↗↗

After a small saga at Le Havre customs, the monument was inaugurated in early June 2004 before roughly a thousand people, in the presence of Chinese diplomatic representatives and French officials. The former mayor of Grandcamp-Maisy, speaking at the ceremony, described it as "a symbol of universal peace addressed to all the citizens of the world — European, African, American, Asian or Oceanian — who love peace and freedom."↗↗↗

Reading the Form: Where East Meets West

The monument rewards a slow, close look, because nearly every line carries a meaning. Seen from the front, the girl's billowing sleeves and body read as two stylised Chinese characters — one signifying modesty and harmony, the other peace and tranquillity — so that the whole figure embodies the Eastern ideal of harmony above all.↗

The same silhouette turns into Western letters depending on the angle. Her two embracing arms trace the "V" of victory and the "W" of world, while a mathematical infinity symbol woven through the design speaks of an endless, tolerant human effort toward a lasting peace. Sculpted in the flowing manner of traditional Chinese painting, the piece deliberately joins the flying goddess of the East with the angel of the West — a yin-and-yang play of symmetry and asymmetry, stability and movement.↗↗

Even the colours are part of the message. The silver-white stainless steel is meant to dissolve into the blue of the sky and the Channel, evoking the pale blues and whites associated with peace and the United Nations; the red granite base standing out below recalls the blood shed by those who fought; and the ring of grass at its feet mirrors the green of the coast and a hard-won tranquillity. A small dove on a raised hand completes the gesture of release.↗↗

A Stop Within the Memory of 1944

Today the statue stands in the memorial precinct at the entrance to Grandcamp-Maisy, on the Rue du Commandant Kieffer — named for the leader of the French commandos who stormed the Normandy beaches — surrounded by steles and plaques honouring the heroes of the landings. The Chinese flag flies here alongside them, a vivid reminder that the peace commemorated on the coast of Normandy was an international undertaking. Set among these monuments, the luminous figure offers a quietly hopeful counterpoint to the heavier war memorials nearby, inviting visitors to think not only about the battle but about the peace it was fought to secure.↗↗↗

Visiting the World Peace Statue

As an outdoor monument, the statue is free and can be viewed at any time of day, and the site offers wheelchair-accessible entrance and parking. Its elevated position at the edge of town makes it easy to combine with a run of D-Day landmarks: Pointe du Hoc is a short drive away, and the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer and the Omaha Beach sectors lie not far beyond. Coming from the coast, many travellers find the gleaming figure visible well before they reach the town, a fitting first note for a day spent among the beaches of the liberation.↗↗
