May through September is the sweet spot: warm days in the low to mid 20s and little rain, with July and August nearly dry. June and September offer the same comfort with fewer crowds. Skip October through March, when monthly rain days jump to 12 or more and humidity stays high. Spring (April to May) is lovely for lush greenery before the summer peak.
For your stay, choose the historic center of Sintra, near the National Palace and Quinta da Regaleira, which suits first-time visitors wanting easy access to the main sights. The Sao Martinho area, a bit higher up, offers quieter surroundings and proximity to the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace; the Tivoli Palácio de Seteais and Valverde Sintra are there. Portela de Sintra, just outside the core, is a residential base with the Sintra Marmoris hotels, handy if you prefer a more local feel. Colares, to the west, is greener and peaceful, with Chalet Vitorino as an option there.
Start with the National Palace of Pena, the colorful hilltop palace that defines Sintra. Then visit Quinta da Regaleira, famous for its Initiation Well and mysterious gardens. The National Palace of Sintra offers a look at royal life, while the Moorish Castle gives sweeping views over the town. If you want nature, the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais surrounds it all with forested trails.
Cape Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, with dramatic cliffs and ocean views. Cascais, a coastal town with a seafront promenade and sandy beaches. Both are covered by the full-day tours that also loop through Sintra's palaces and the natural park.
Two days in Sintra lets you see the National Palace of Pena, Quinta da Regaleira, the Moorish Castle, and the National Palace of Sintra at a relaxed pace. Add a third day for a trip to Cape Roca or the Park and Palace of Monserrate. If you want to explore the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais on foot, plan for an extra day as well.
