AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Axehead Lake is a striking 17-acre body of water tucked into the Park Ridge stretch of the Des Plaines River valley, managed by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. Created in 1958 when highway contractors carved out a gravel borrow pit for the Tri-State Tollway, the lake's steep sides and remarkably clear water make it look almost like a glacial kettle—except its origin is one of engineering serendipity. Today it's a beloved local spot for shore fishing, ice fishing in winter, and a peaceful pause on the Des Plaines River Trail.↗↗↗
What draws people back is a rare combination: the lake's deep, clear water supports a thriving fishery stocked twice yearly with rainbow trout, while the surrounding floodplain forest offers wildlife encounters with beavers, warblers, and fox squirrels just steps from the parking lot. It's an accessible, no-boat-needed outdoor escape minutes from Chicago's northern suburbs.↗↗
