AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Barrowsville Pond is a 44-acre recreational water body in the Barrowsville village section of Norton, Massachusetts, created during the industrial revolution by damming the Wading River to power local mills. Today the pond and its surrounding Conservation Area offer a quiet New England setting for fishing, paddling, skating, and woodland walks.↗
The pond sits at 91 feet above sea level within the Wading River Watershed, owned and managed by the Town of Norton Conservation Commission. Public access is available from Barrows Street and through Conservation Commission land on Power Street at the bridge, making it a neighborhood gem easily reached from the town center.↗
From Mill Power to Quiet Recreation
Barrowsville Pond takes its name from the once-prominent Barrows family who lived in this section of Norton. During the industrial revolution, the Wading River was dammed here to create a reliable water source for operating several mills that powered the local economy. Though the pond is classified as man-made, perennial water has always been present thanks to the natural flow of the river, giving it a character that feels more organic than artificial.↗
