AT A GLANCE
Why go?
On the corner where West 49th Street meets Sixth Avenue, two larger-than-life bronze creatures pose for the camera. Paparazzi Dogman—a broad-chested, dog-headed man—and his companion Paparazzi Rabbitwoman (originally introduced as Rabbitgirl), a slender, ladylike hare with a long neck and an elegant poise, stand about seven feet tall in the sunken plaza opposite Rockefeller Center. Each grips a camera of their own, as if they have just spotted you, and that playful reversal is the whole charm of the piece.↗↗↗
The sculptures were created by the Sydney-based husband-and-wife team Gillie and Marc Schattner, who have turned their anthropomorphic animal couple into a traveling public-art campaign built around one idea: that love and acceptance beat judgment. The pairing of a dog and a rabbit—unlikely companions in the animal kingdom—stands for all people, whatever their background, coming together as one. The work was born in 2011 and has since been installed at several New York addresses, including 142 West 49th Street, where this pin points.↗
