AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tucked into the wooded foothills of the Ramapo Mountains in Mahwah, Darlington Lake is the bright, swimmable centerpiece of Darlington County Park. In summer the lake's shore fills with families, anglers and casual paddlers of calm, while out of season it is a quiet walking-and-watching-water destination with lookout points over the water. A 4.3-star favorite with hundreds of visitor ratings, it is one of Bergen County's most beloved single-day outdoor escapes.↗
A Ramapo Foothill Park Built Around Water
Darlington Lake sits within Darlington County Park, a Bergen County park spread across the lower slopes of the Ramapo range and reached off Route 202 at 600 Darlington Avenue. The county describes the grounds as a foothill park in the Ramapo Mountains containing three lakes, threaded with basketball, handball and tennis courts, a multi-use path, picnicking areas and wildlife viewing. The park itself ranges from roughly 127 to 178 acres depending on the county's own listing—what matters to visitors is the water and the green space around it.↗↗
Darlington Lake is the main recreation lake, and the park's other water body hosts the seasonal inflatable obstacle course. Together they give the place its reputation as Bergen County's "summertime jewel," a spot equally suited to a full hot day by the water or a brief, restorative walk along the shore.
