AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tucked into Opishnia—the storied "capital of Ukrainian pottery" in Poltava Oblast—the Memorial Museum-Estate of Potter Vasyl Omelianenko invites you into the actual house and yard of one of the nation's most beloved clay artists. Opened on 3 August 2025 to mark the centenary of the master's birth, the estate is a branch of the National Museum-Reserve of Ukrainian Pottery and preserves the homestead exactly as the self-taught potter lived and worked in it.↗↗↗
Here everything speaks of the man: the house, the courtyard, the trees, the kiln he built with his own hands. The experience pairs an intimate memorial home with a surprising open-air gallery of monumental modern clay sculptures, so tradition and contemporary art meet on the same patch of ground—all in the language of clay.↗↗
The master of lions, horses and fairy-tale birds
Vasyl Omelianenko (1925–2025) was a legend of the Opishnian pottery school and one of the most decorated masters of artistic ceramics in the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries. He was a Honored Master of Folk Art of Ukraine, laureate of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize and of the Danylo Shcherbakivskyi Prize, and a member of both the national unions of folk-art masters and of artists.
