AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Seyit Onbaşı Mosque stands in Çanakkale's Esenler neighborhood, carrying the name of the most celebrated hero of the 1915 Gallipoli naval battles—Seyit Onbaşı, the corporal who single-handedly hoisted 275-kilogram artillery shells onto his cannon to sink an Allied warship. A medium-sized, unpretentious neighborhood mosque, it embodies the spirit of a city where nearly every street, park, and public building is dedicated to the memory of those who fought here over a century ago.↗↗
Visitors find a welcoming, humble place of worship praised for its serene atmosphere, helpful congregation, and even a small tea-and-coffee spot after prayers. Its 4.6-star rating on Google Maps reflects a community that values spiritual tranquility over architectural spectacle.↗↗
A Hero's Name in Stone
Seyit Onbaşı (Seyit the Corporal) became the defining symbol of Çanakkale's defense in March 1915, when he and his comrade Ali lifted enormous cannon shells—each weighing more than a man—up the steep earth steps of Mecidiye Battery on the Asian shore of the Dardanelles. One of his shots struck the bow of the HMS Ocean, sending the ship to the bottom of the strait. That feat earned him lasting fame across Turkey and gave Çanakkale one of its most honored namesakes.
