AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Akyaka Beach is the free city shoreline where the icy Azmak River empties into Gökova Bay on Turkey's southwest coast. Shallow, gently waving water and a wide sandy stretch make it an inviting spot to cool off after exploring the town's timber-framed streets—and the thermal winds that sweep across the bay here have turned this coastline into one of Turkey's top kitesurfing destinations.↗↗↗
Unlike the resort strips found elsewhere on the Aegean, Akyaka's beach remains part of a slow-city landscape: no high-rise hotels crowd the sand, no all-inclusive mega-resorts block the view. You arrive on foot from a town where protected architecture, riverside fish restaurants and ancient rock tombs give every beach day a sense of place.↗↗
Where River Meets Sea
The city beach sits at the exact point where the Azmak—Akyaka's famous crystal-clear freshwater river—joins the salt water of Gökova Bay. On one side you can wade in the chilly current where fish restaurants line the banks; on the other, the bay opens toward the horizon. The meeting of fresh and salt water creates a unique micro-environment, and on calm days you can swim upstream into the river's startling cold while still seeing the sea ahead.
