AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Lillsjön is a small, clear-water lake on the northern edge of the Stockholm region, framed by the town of Kungsängen in Upplands-Bro municipality. It is the centrepiece of the Lillsjön-Örnässjön nature reserve and one of the most popular lakeside outings near the capital, combining a fully serviced beach with forest trails, fishing and year-round recreation just a short journey from the city.↗↗
Despite its humble name, meaning simply 'the little lake', Lillsjön punches well above its weight. The water is rated good for both ecology and chemistry, and unusually rich in aquatic plants because it is clear yet nutrient-rich, a combination that gives the lake its special character and a thriving community of species, some of them red-listed.↗↗
A lakeside playground
The heart of any summer visit is Lillsjöbadet, a developed beach with a sandy shore of around 60 metres, a swimming pontoon, a diving tower and an accessibility ramp that makes entering the water easy for everyone. The friluftsområde alongside is built for a whole sunny day: grill spots including an accessible grill hut, a playground with swings, a balance course and a parkour track, a beach-volleyball pitch, boule and bangolf, plus a stage and dance floor. Canoe hire is on hand for getting out across the water, and a separate dog beach means you can bring the whole family.
