AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Fantholmen is a small, leafy island in the eastern Lake Mälaren archipelago, tucked into the built-up part of the town of Ekerö and reached by a short hop from the bridges that tie the Mälaröarna islands to Stockholm. Rather than a landmark attraction, it is a quiet pocket of lakefront villas on a rocky point, with its own jetties, a stretch of sand and, by all accounts, some of the best sunsets on this side of the water.↗↗
As one of the roughly 140 islands and islets that make up Ekerö municipality, Fantholmen captures the everyday charm of the Mälaren islands: open water on three sides, birch and granite close at hand, and a relaxed, near-the-city feel where you are minutes from a bus to Brommaplan yet surrounded by the archipelago.↗↗
The draw here is waterfront calm and proximity: Fantholmen sits inside Ekerö tätort, so the harbour life of Jungfrusund, the island-hopping trails, and two UNESCO World Heritage sites—Drottningholm Palace and the Viking town of Birka—are all within easy reach for a day from this corner of Mälaren.↗
