AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Ochakovka (Reka Ochakovka) is a small, easily overlooked river that threads its way across southwest Moscow, carving a green corridor of ravines, ponds and parkland through four busy city districts. Only about 10 km long, it rises in a wooded gully on the slopes of the Tyoply Stan upland and flows northwest to join the Ramenka near Michurinsky Prospekt, eventually draining toward the Moskva River and the Caspian Sea far beyond the capital. For a walk that trades boulevards for boardwalks, footbridges and quiet water, this valley punches well above its modest size.↗↗
What makes the Ochakovka worth seeking out is the way nature and neighbourhood have been stitched back together along its banks. Its floodplain holds two main ponds, including the Big Ochakovka Pond (Bolshoy Ochakovsky Prud), and the lower stretch has been reimagined as a landscaped 'Ochakovsky Park' with larch-plank paths, carved shelters and an elegant arched footbridge linking the shores. The sources and valley are protected as natural monuments, and in the upper reaches the river runs through the Tyoply Stan landscape reserve, where the ravine woodland, small bridges and spring-fed pools feel a world away from the metro stations nearby.↗
