Victoria FountainHistorical landmark

Kuala Lumpur · MY

Victoria Fountain

On the southern corner of Dataran Merdeka (Merdeka Square), just steps from the city's soaring flagpole, the Victoria Fountain is one of Kuala Lumpur's oldest surviving public monuments. Cast in England and erected in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, this slender cast-iron fountain has been quietly running in the heart of the historic core for well over a century, outlasting the empire that commissioned it. For travellers, it is a compact and photogenic stop on any walk through old Kuala Lumpur: a piece of Victorian craftsmanship framed by Mughal-revivist government buildings, a Tudor-style club and the very lawn where the Union Jack was lowered for the last time at independence in 1957. It sits at eye level, free to visit, and rewards a close look at its Art Nouveau ironwork and tile panels.
