Neskuchny Garden

Neskuchny Garden is Moscow's oldest landscaped park, a 59-hectare wooded retreat on the right bank of the Moskva River that grew out of a cluster of 18th-century aristocratic estates. Where other Moscow parks feel engineered, this one still carries the hush of an old country house: terraced slopes, mossy stone bridges, classical pavilions and shaded alleys that once hosted balls for the city's greatest families. Today it forms the historical heart of Gorky Park, yet keeps a mellower, greener character of its own. The park's name—"not a boring garden"—is said to come from Prince Nikita Trubetskoy, who from 1728 threw lavish weekend entertainments so reliably fun that guests renamed the estate after the good time they had there. What began as one man's party grounds became an imperial summer residence, a nationalized public park, and now one of the most atmospheric places to wander in central Moscow.
