Osteroder Vogelstation
Tucked into the forest between Osterode am Harz and the Söse Reservoir, the Osterode Forest Bird Sanctuary (Waldvogelstation) lets you walk a gentle 400-metre loop among roughly 50 native bird species living in spacious, natural enclosures. Eagles owls, peacocks, black grouse, and runner ducks share this woodland habitat alongside bees, ants, and free-roaming rabbits. It is a place that feels more like a nature encounter than a zoo — birds are visible at eye level among the trees, information boards explain local ecology, and children can feed the ducks with specialist food. A barefoot sensory path, picnic spots, and a school-oriented Nature Explorer Diploma round out the experience.
