Mud Lake
Tucked into the coastal bayou country of Pasadena, Texas, Mud Lake is a quiet sheet of water where the land's slow drainage finally meets the sea. It forms the mouth of the Armand Bayou watershed, with the bayou emptying into its north end and the larger Clear Lake joining at its south, sitting in the flat, industrially threaded sprawl southeast of Houston and beside the NASA Johnson Space Center. In 2020 the lake was renamed Lake Mark Kramer to honor the longtime chief naturalist of the Armand Bayou Nature Center, whose decades of work restored the wetlands around it. What is left behind is a pocket of genuine coastal wilderness inside a very urbanized area—part of the nature center's protected prairie, marsh and forest, and a living postcard of Gulf Coast ecology.
