Cabane du Col de Mille
Perched at 2,473 metres on a natural balcony above Liddes in Switzerland's Valais canton, the Cabane du Col de Mille is one of the most rewarding mountain refuges in the Western Alps. It serves as a key stopover on three legendary multi-day treks — the Tour des Combins, the Tour du Saint-Bernard, and the Haute Route linking Chamonix to Zermatt — while its sweeping views stretch from the Combins massif all the way to Mont Blanc. The current hut, rebuilt in 2013–2014, is a striking modern structure clad in a metal shell designed to withstand harsh alpine weather. Fully energy-autonomous thanks to rooftop photovoltaic and thermal solar panels, it was the first mountain cabin to earn both ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO 14001 (environmental) certifications. Inside, hikers find comfortable dormitories, showers, and a bright dining room opening onto a terrace facing the Combins and Vélan massifs.
