Japanese Peace Pagoda - Rumassala
The Japanese Peace Pagoda – Rumassala is a gleaming white stupa perched on Rumassala Hill above Unawatuna, on Sri Lanka's southern coast between the beach town and Galle. Built by monks of the Japanese Buddhist Nipponzan-Myōhōji order as a monument to world peace, it pairs a serene, modern shrine with a circular deck that opens onto a 360-degree sweep of the Indian Ocean, Unawatuna Bay and the forested ridges beyond. It is one of the most quietly compelling stops on the Galle coast: an active place of worship rather than a ticketed attraction, where the white dome against the sea and the long views toward Galle Fort make the climb worthwhile. Visitors come for the calm, the panoramas and the chance to combine the hilltop with the shaded Rumassala forest and nearby Jungle Beach.
