Myoshuji
Myōshūji (明宗寺) is a Jōdo Shinshū temple of the Hongwan-ji branch on Teramachi, Matsue's historic "temple town," a short walk from JR Matsue Station. Founded around 400 years ago in the Keichō era and named in 1602 by its head temple, it is regarded as one of the oldest Pure Land Buddhist temples in the Izumo region — a working place of worship rather than a ticketed sight, open to quiet visitors and worshippers alike. What gives the temple its story is an unusually noble thread: its founding monk is recorded as a descendant of the legendary loyalist Kusunoki Masashige, and the temple was invited into Matsue by Horio Yoshiharu, the warlord who established the castle town. Today the grounds are shaded by a great camphor tree, the main hall dates to 1841, and sixteen generations of abbots have kept its nembutsu practice alive.
