Mut Castle
Mut Castle stands at the very heart of the town of Mut in Mersin Province, a weathered stone fortress whose layered history mirrors the story of southern Anatolia itself. Built atop a site that may trace back to Roman Claudiopolis, the castle was contested and rebuilt by Byzantines, Seljuks, Karamanids, and Ottomans before losing its military role entirely. Today it is an atmospheric walk-through ruin where visitors can circle its remaining bastions, peer into the cylindrical inner keep, and imagine centuries of sieges on this modest hill in the Göksu Valley. Open every day from 8 AM to 9 PM with free admission and wheelchair-accessible entry, Mut Castle is an easy and rewarding stop for history travellers touring the inland Mersin region, whether en route to the ancient sites of Alahan Monastery or Mavga Castle further into the Taurus Mountains.
