Nemea
Ancient Nemea sits in a serene upland valley in Corinthia, northeastern Peloponnese, about 24 kilometres southwest of Corinth. Once one of the four great Panhellenic sanctuaries of Greece—alongside Olympia, Delphi, and Isthmia—it hosted the Nemean Games from at least 573 BC and was home to the myth of Heracles and the Nemean Lion. Today the site rewards visitors with a beautifully reconstructed Temple of Zeus, a remarkably preserved ancient stadium with its vaulted entrance tunnel still bearing Greek graffiti, an on-site museum, and a landscape of vineyards and olive groves that gives the whole visit a gentle, unhurried quality rare among Greece's major archaeological parks.
