Svinøya
Svinøya is a small island in Svolvær harbour, connected to Lofoten's main town by a bridge just a short walk from the centre. It is the oldest neighbourhood of Svolvær, a place where nearly two centuries of fishing trade, stockfish commerce and coastal life are still visible in the buildings, the wharves and the drying racks that crowd its waterfront. Today it is a living fishing village turned cultural quarter: restored rorbu cabins line the quays, a celebrated fish restaurant occupies an 1828 trading wharf, and an art gallery honours the painter who grew up here and captured Lofoten on canvas. Visitors come to wander the island's narrow lanes between old wooden houses and working fish facilities, to taste stockfish, to learn the stories of the fishermen who once packed into tiny cabins by the hundreds during the cod season, and to enjoy views that sweep from open sea to the dramatic peaks that define the Lofoten skyline.
