Westfalen Culinarium
The Westfalen Culinarium in Nieheim was once Germany's most ambitious food museum complex — four interconnected museums celebrating the culinary heritage of Westphalia, housed in six historic farmer-citizen townhouses along the town's Lange Straße. Opened in 2006 and honored with the German Tourism Prize that same year, the complex has since evolved: the Bread and Ham museums have closed, but the beloved German Cheese Museum, the Westphalian Beer Museum, and the delightfully eccentric Sack Museum still welcome visitors seasonally. Today, the surviving museums form what the town calls the Nieheimer Museumslandschaft — a charming walk through the historic center of a small town that proudly calls itself Germany's Cheese Capital. Each museum is intimate, hands-on, and packed with surprising stories about the everyday foods that shaped Westphalian identity.
