Mubarakiya Old Market

Tucked between Abdullah Al-Salem, Abdullah Al-Mubarak and Palestine streets in the heart of Kuwait City, Souq Al-Mubarakiya is the country's most beloved surviving traditional market — a low, partially shaded warren of lanes where spices, dates, gold, antiques and steaming pots of Arabic coffee still do brisk trade the way they did before oil. Locals call it simply Al-Mubarakiya; it is one of Kuwait's oldest souks and its clearest living link to the pre-oil trading past. The market takes its name from the ruling Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah, who around 1897 erected a small garden kiosk here that gave ordinary Kuwaitis direct access to their leader — a tradition of open conversation that continues today in the souk's diwaniya meeting hall. Built and rebuilt over more than a century, and restored after severe damage in the 1990 Iraqi invasion, Al-Mubarakiya keeps its old-world aura while quietly embracing new cafés, art and a youthful crowd that has turned the lanes into one of the city's favourite evening hangouts.
