Lago Pacheco
Lago Pacheco is a seasonal lake stretching roughly 70 kilometers across the windswept pampa of Chilean Tierra del Fuego, sitting at the headwaters of the Río Grande — the great river that flows eastward across the island into Argentina. Classified by Chile's official geographic records as a small lagoon since at least 1924, it exists in a state of constant flux between open water and marshland, shaped by the Patagonian winds and seasonal snowmelt. There is no developed tourist infrastructure here. What Lago Pacheco offers is something increasingly rare in Patagonia: vast, trackless solitude at the edge of the inhabited world, accessible only by gravel roads and permission from the estancia lands it crosses.
