Monument to the Heroes of the Battleship "Emperor Alexander III" (Tsushima Obelisk)

In a quiet corner of Nikolsky Garden, beside the blue-and-gold Naval St Nicholas Cathedral on the Kryukov Canal, a slender red-granite obelisk rises to honour the sailors of the battleship "Emperor Alexander III" who went down at the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905. Known to locals as the Tsushima Obelisk, it is one of St Petersburg's most moving and least crowded memorials — a national tragedy cast in polished stone and bronze. Erected in 1908 by subscription among the officers of the Imperial Lifeguard Crew and opened before the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, the monument remembers an entire squadron lost in the Russo-Japanese War. An 8.5-metre obelisk crowned by a bronze eagle, it carries the names of the dead and a Gospel line on the love that lays down its life for friends — a fitting stop for anyone drawn to maritime history and the quieter, more reflective side of the city.
