Cochon Island
Cochon Island is a tiny, rocky islet of just eight hectares lying a short distance north-west of Kidney Island at the southern entrance to Berkeley Sound, about 500 metres off the coast of East Falkland. Together the two islands form the Kidney Island Group Important Bird Area, a Crown-owned National Nature Reserve recognised for its internationally significant seabird colonies. Cochon Island is not open to visitors. Under the Stanley Tussac Grass Islands Management Plan, access to this island is restricted to research and conservation purposes only, preserving its pristine tussac grass habitat and breeding colonies from disturbance. Travellers can, however, learn about it as part of the remarkable wildlife story of the islands just outside Stanley.
