Heian-kyō Ukyō Rokujō Ippō Rokuchō Mansion Site
Beneath the modern buildings of Kyoto Research Park in Shimogyo Ward lie the remains of a grand aristocratic mansion from the mid-9th century, when Heian-kyō was still young and its western district thrived as a residential quarter for the court elite. Excavated in 1987–88 before the park's construction, this one-machi complex revealed the remarkably intact footprint of an early Heian noble's household — formal reception halls, domestic kitchens, wells, and servant quarters — offering a rare physical window into the world before the famous shinden-zukuri architectural style fully crystallized. Today the site is marked as a registered historic landmark, and visitors can see a detailed one-fortieth scale model of the mansion at the Heian Aristocrats' Life and Culture Exhibition Room in KRP's East Sector, alongside excavated pottery, coins, and original column bases.
