FukunenjiBuddhist temple

Fukunenji

Fukunenji (福念寺) is a small Jōdo Shinshū temple of the Ōtani-ha branch, set in the quiet hamlet of Manganji on the eastern edge of Maibara, Shiga. Far from the grand temple complexes of the region, it is a working neighbourhood house of faith—a parish temple whose grounds open onto rice fields and a handful of village lanes just a few hundred metres from Ōmi-Nagaoka Station. It is the kind of place travellers stumble upon rather than seek out, and that unhurried, everyday quality is precisely its charm. For visitors, Fukunenji offers a glimpse of how Pure Land Buddhism lives in ordinary rural Ōmi rather than in a curated sight. The temple sits in an agricultural settlement at the foot of the country's Ibuki-and-Biwako landscape, along a stretch of the old Tōkaidō corridor where post-town heritage and paddy scenery still shape daily life. Arriving by train and walking through the lanes to the temple makes for a short, contemplative detour between the lakeside towns of Maibara and Nagahama.
