Sri Sumangalaramaya - Colombo 08
Sri Sumangalaramaya is a working Buddhist temple (vihara) tucked into the residential heart of Borella in central Colombo, set back on the quiet lane that carries its name, Sri Sumangala Mawatha (Sri Sumangala Avenue). It is not a grand tourist monument but a living neighbourhood shrine—one that gives visitors and locals alike an easy glimpse of everyday urban Theravada Buddhism in Sri Lanka's commercial capital. What lends the place a quiet appeal is its setting. Borella, and especially its Punchi Borella quarter, is unusually dense with Buddhist worship centres, so a short walk here can take you past several temples, bodhi shrines and monastery halls in the same neighbourhood. Sri Sumangalaramaya sits comfortably within that cluster, an intimate pocket of calm amid the bustle of Colombo.
