Xa Tac Temple

Perched on the bank of the Ka Long River where Vietnam's northeastern frontier meets China, Xa Tac Temple (Đền Xã Tắc) is far more than a village shrine. Built in the late 13th to early 14th century under the Tran dynasty, it honours the genius of the soil and grain—the spirit of the land and state itself—and long served as a cultural “border marker” asserting Vietnamese sovereignty at the very edge of the country. The temple you see today was lovingly rebuilt in 2009 on a sweeping 20,000 m² compound after the original structure was razed in the 1979 border war. Its ironwood main hall, layered dragon-scale roofs, solid-bronze deity statues and surviving 1879 stone steles make it one of Móng Cái's most rewarding heritage stops, now recognised as a National Cultural-Historical Relic. It is open daily from 6:00 to 20:00, free to enter as a working place of worship, and comes alive most of all during the revived Xa Tac Festival held around the 30th of the first lunar month into the early second, when processions, water-drawing rites and floating lanterns on the Ka Long draw crowds from across the region.
