Laohei Shan
Laohei Shan (老黑山, “Old Black Mountain”) is a high forested summit in the south-eastern corner of Jilin, rising in the hills above Linjiang, a county-level city in Baishan that hugs the Yalu River and the North Korean border. At about 1,450 metres it is the second-highest named peak in the Linjiang district and one of the taller summits in the province, and its roughly 578 metres of topographic prominence means it stands well clear of the surrounding ridges rather than hiding among them. This is a mountain for walkers and peak-baggers rather than a ticketed scenic spot: there is no resort, cable car or visitor centre, just clean air, dense Changbai-region forest and, on clear days, far-reaching views across a remote border landscape. If you enjoy quiet summits, wild country and assembling your own route in the hills of north-east China, Laohei Shan is a rewarding objective tucked into a district better known for its autumn colour and Yalu River scenery than for its peaks.
