Fontana del Carciofo
The Fontana del Carciofo — the "Artichoke Fountain" — stands at the very heart of Piazza Trieste e Trento, the irregular square that funnels Naples between Via Toledo, Via Chiaia, the Teatro San Carlo and the grand sweep of Piazza del Plebiscito. Commissioned in the mid-1950s by mayor Achille Lauro as a gift to the city, it is one of the newest of Naples' monumental fountains and one of its most photographed meeting points. Its nickname comes from the stylized bronze flower at the top of the fountain: a layered corolla whose overlapping petals look very much like an artichoke, the vegetable beloved across Campania. Tidy, two-tiered and ringed by jets, the structure was restored in 2015 and today reads as a polished mid-century landmark in a setting that is centuries older.
