BAOBAB SACRE DE NIANING

About eight kilometres inland from the coastal town of Mbour, in the Serer village of Nianing, stands a baobab so enormous and so steeped in history that it has become one of Senegal's most striking cultural landmarks. Known as the Sacred Baobab of Nianing, this hollow giant is not simply an impressive tree: its cavernous trunk once served as the exclusive burial place of the griots, the storytellers and oral historians of the Serer people, turning the living tree into a standing mausoleum. What draws visitors today is the rare chance to step inside a tree that locals describe as many centuries old and many metres wide, with a natural opening large enough to enter like the mouth of a cave. Inside, generations of griots were once laid to rest, wrapped in white shrouds and set upright, their invisible "archives" of word and music meant to radiate forever. The baobab has since moved from a forbidden, taboo site to a place of pilgrimage, guided tour and quiet reflection.
