Shinkō-ji Temple (Maizuruyama Shinkō-ji)
Shinkō-ji (眞光寺), fully Maizuruyama Shinkō-ji — the 'Dancing Crane Mountain' temple — is a Jodo Shinshu (Pure Land) Buddhist house of worship set in the old post-town core of Nankan, a small town in Tamana District at the northern edge of Kumamoto Prefecture. Its main object of devotion is Amida Nyorai, the Buddha of the Western Pure Land, the focus of the Hongwanji-rooted Pure Land tradition that spread to ordinary households across Kyushu. This is a quiet parish temple rather than a showpiece tourist site, and that is part of its charm. It sits a few minutes on foot from the 'ukara' bus stop and Nankan Terminal, among the streets of a town that once served as the final overnight rest stop within Higo province for domain lords travelling the Buzen Kaido highway. Visitors who come are usually combining it with the town's post-road heritage, the preserved Nankan Ochaya and the relaxed local atmosphere.
