Wat Yang Yong

Wat Yang Yong (also known as Wat Yangyong or Wat Pratu Chai) is a Buddhist temple of remarkable historical depth in Tha Wang Thong subdistrict, on the edge of ancient Phayao city. Built around the 15th century, it stood at the Victory Gate—the very exit through which Lan Na armies marched to battle, pausing for blessings before facing their enemies. Today the temple houses its sacred principal image, Phra Yang Yong: a towering sandstone Buddha in the classic Maravichai (subduing Mara) posture, measuring 2.00 metres across the lap and 3.22 metres in height, carved in the distinctive Phayao school of art. This revered statue has been considered a guardian companion to the city of Phayao since ancient times.
