Lac Makwa

Lac Makwa — called Makwa Sàgahigan in the Algonquin language, meaning "Bear Lake" — is a quiet freshwater lake nestled in the forested interior of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation reserve in western Quebec's Outaouais region. Named for the bear, an animal of deep spiritual significance in Anishinaabe culture, this lake sits within the traditional territory of the largest Algonquin community in Canada, surrounded by a mosaic of waterways, old-growth forest, and time-honoured ways of life. Lac Makwa isn't a resort lake with marinas and waterfront restaurants. It's a place where nature remains primary and the cultural landscape belongs to the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg people, whose ancestors have lived alongside these waters for centuries. For visitors drawn to quiet wilderness, Indigenous cultural experiences, or the tradition of fishing in the heart of an Anishinaabe community, the area around Lac Makwa offers something increasingly rare in southern Quebec: genuine stillness and living heritage.
