Nanto City Yorosupa National Museum
Tucked into the Kamitaira hamlet of Toyama's Gokayama mountains, this small local-history museum (たいら郷土館, Taira Kyōdōkan) tells the story of two crafts that once sustained life in these steep valleys: sericulture, the silkworm rearing practiced beneath the sweeping thatch of the region's gassho-zukuri farmhouses, and the manufacture of saltpeter (shōnitsu). That gunpowder ingredient, made from the nitrogen-rich conditions of the farmhouses' own attics, became a foundation of the wealth that built the famed Kaga "million-koku" domain. In an area now world-famous for its UNESCO-listed villages, the museum offers a quieter, more textured look at why people were able to live in such an isolated mountain landscape in the first place. Note that as of 2026 the official Gokayama site lists the museum as temporarily closed (休館) due to circumstances, so travellers should confirm its status before making a special trip.
