HolterhöfchenHistorical landmark

Hilden · DE

Holterhöfchen

On the quiet edge of Hilden's town centre, the Holterhöfchen looks at first like little more than a leafy park: grassy mounds, a belt of trees, a couple of ponds and a low fragment of ivy-covered stonework. But those unassuming rises are the remains of a fortified farmstead ringed by ramparts and ditches, laid out in the 9th and 10th centuries on the flat terrace where the Lower Rhine plain meets the middle terrace. The site has puzzled archaeologists for roughly 150 years, and today it is one of the most curious historical landmarks in the Rhineland's Bergisches border country. The attraction here is atmosphere rather than grand monuments. The ringwork's twin ramparts and ditches still trace their oval outline across the green, the foundations of a small stone building survive as the only visible masonry, and a 19th-century park with paths and ponds invites a gentle wander through a thousand years of history. For anyone interested in early medieval strongholds, local legends, or simply a peaceful green space within easy reach of the town, the Holterhöfchen is a small, memorable stop.
