Noordkasteel
Noordkasteel is a curious kind of landmark: a once-mighty 19th-century citadel that survived long enough to be dismantled by the very port it stood beside, and is today a tranquil green wedge tucked between the Amerikadok and the River Scheldel in Antwerp's northern docks. Built as the northernmost anchor of the Brialmont fortification belt, the fortress has almost vanished above ground, yet its grassy ramparts, water and open paths make it an appealing spot to walk, cycle and step away from the city. What draws visitors now is the contrast: an unexpectedly wide slice of nature amid cranes, docks and industrial quays, laced with remnants of military earthworks and a pond that was once the fort's main moat. It is open around the clock as a public green space, though the ongoing Oosterweel connection works can mean partial closures, so it rewards a visit with a little flexibility.
