Victoria Battery
Victoria Battery is a historical military site on the western slopes of the Rock of Gibraltar, steeped in Victorian-era coastal defence history. Originally built in the 1840s and later expanded to house one of the world's largest muzzle-loading artillery pieces, the site today is best known for the underground fortification structures that still survive beneath the Gibraltar Fire Station. While the imposing gun itself was relocated to nearby Napier of Magdala Battery in the 1880s, Victoria Battery remains a significant waypoint on Gibraltar's military heritage trail — a place where the ambitions of the British Empire's coastal defence strategy can still be traced beneath the modern streetscape.
