Lago Vargas
Lago Vargas is a tiny lakeside settlement and the lake it sits beside, right on the Carretera Austral (Ruta 7) in the deep south of Chile's Aysén region, roughly 70 kilometres south of Cochrane. It is one of those quiet, easy-to-miss pauses on the wild southern stretch of the highway that links Cochrane with Caleta Tortel and Villa O'Higgins. Here the road threads through Nothofagus forest, opens onto wide grey-blue water, and the snow-dusted peaks of the Andes linger in the distance. There is no big attraction or ticket gate at Lago Vargas—its appeal is precisely the opposite. It is a working pioneer community with a slow, contemplative rhythm, a family-run campsite that feels like a small living museum, and an old wooden schoolhouse that the region has put forward as a heritage monument. For travellers on the Carretera Austral it is the kind of place you stop at to stretch your legs, share a meal, and remember how much open, unhurried Patagonia is left.
