Fort McKavett
Fort McKavett State Historic Site is a remarkably preserved frontier army post perched atop a windswept hill in the Texas Hill Country, twenty-two miles southwest of Menard. Established in 1852, it is considered one of the best intact examples of a Texas Indian Wars military post (1850–1875), with restored barracks, officers' quarters, a hospital-turned-visitor center, schoolhouse, and ruins that tell the story of soldiers, Buffalo Soldiers, women, and children who once lived here. General William T. Sherman famously called it "the prettiest post in Texas"—a description that still holds true for visitors who make the drive into this remote corner of Menard County.
