Zandgroeve
On top of the Goudsberg hill just outside Lunteren, the Grote Zandgroeve is a vast, sunken sand pit turned open-air attraction. Roughly 42 hectares and about 20 metres deep, this former quarry was dug for decades to win the sand and gravel that paved roads and built houses across the region. Extraction has long since stopped, and the scooped-out landscape has been reclaimed by wild vegetation, wide grassy slopes and one striking piece of land art: a flowing Corten-steel staircase that reads like a three-dimensional timeline of the land itself. Today the Zandgroeve is free to wander at any hour and is part of the 'Goudsberg – Middelpunt van Nederland' (Center of the Netherlands) area, the geographic heart of the country marked on this hillside. It suits families, dog walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders, and in winter its slopes become the favourite sledding hill for the children of Lunteren. Come for the scale of the pit, the timeline staircase and the easy walks that link it to the wider hilltop.
