Basalt kanyon

Basalt kanyon

Just east of Beit She'an, where the Harod Stream breaks out of the narrow Harod Valley and drops toward the Jordan, the water has carved a short but dramatic gorge into a layer of hard volcanic rock. This is Basalt Canyon — קניון הבזלת — a compact, easy-going site where a swaying suspended footbridge takes you above a string of small waterfalls, and a thick wall of black basalt sits plainly beneath a paler crust of spring-deposited travertine. It is one of the Valley of Springs' most photogenic stops, and a low-effort outing that suits families, casual walkers and photographers alike. Unlike a long ridge hike, this is a short, self-contained experience: roughly a kilometre of paved paths and a few side strolls, an hour to two at an easy pace, open all year and rarely over-crowded. The appeal is concentrated — one striking bridge, one vivid geological seam, and the rushing stream threading through it all.
